Jacob Hemphill fired a complete game two-hitter to lead Nanih Waiya to a key 2-1 win over region foe West Lowndes last week, pushing the Warriors to 2-0 in district play.
“We finally played pretty good defense and figured out a way to win,” said NW head coach Tyler Rogers. “It was a quick game. Neither one of us really hit anything.”
The big offensive blow of the game came in the bottom of the fifth when Ben Cumberland stroked a double that plated both of Nanih Waiya’s runs. The lone run West Lowndes picked up off Hemphill — who recorded nine strikeouts — was unearned.
The Warriors were set to visit East Oktibbeha in a region contest on Tuesday, before hosting West Oktibbeha in a region doubleheader on Friday beginning at 5 p.m.
Next week sees the Warriors hosting Noxapater on April 8 and Choctaw County on April 10, before visiting Eupora on April 12.
NW played two games last week, dropping a 10-3 decision to French Camp Academy on Monday.
“We didn’t pitch very well and we didn’t field very well,” Rogers said of his team’s effort against the Panthers.
Stuart Ball had an RBI double in the game for the Warriors.
