The Winston Patriots had already gotten a dose of the Heritage Patriots earlier this season in the opening jamboree at Winston, where the Winston Patriots were out scored in the event. But last Friday night at Patriot Field, the home team Patriots got their second dose, falling 28-7 to a much improved team from Heritage.
Winston did rebound from the 9 deadly turnovers in their last game, to only turn the ball over only three times to the opponents this week. The loss dropped Winston to 0-3 on the year while Heritage improved to 3-0.
Heritage added the first points in the opening quarter with 14 seconds remaining to go up 7-0. They would then add another score 6:05 before halftime to increase their lead to 14-0. On the following kickoff, Winston faced their first turnover of the night when the kickoff was fumbled at their own 30 yard line.
The local Patriots would tighten up on defense and cause a punt at mid field after a series of Heritage penalties. Both teams then exchanged punts and Winston got the ball back just before halftime when Tyler Miles intercepted the ball and returned it 18 yards to the Heritage18 yard line.
However, a Winston penalty on the return sent the ball back down field where Winston would take over with less than 2 minutes left in the half.
After failing to produce first down yardage, both teams retired to the locker rooms with Heritage holding on to their 14-0 lead. Winston then came back out with possession to start the second half and were forced to punt.
The snap from center was then dropped by the punter and Heritage took over in great field position at the Winston 10 yard line. Heritage then easily produced their third score and PAT of the game to increase their lead to 21-0. Winston followed by moving the ball out to their own 44 yard line, and elected to go for the first down.
Unfortunately they were stopped short and Heritage took over in Winston territory. Another Heritage score was then added with the PAT and this ended the Heritage scoring for the contest. As the final quarter got underway, Winston had ball possession and moved the ball down field by means of a short passing attack and managed to add their only score of the night. Logan Webb took the ball 8 yards up the middle for the score with Michael Miller kicking the PAT to cut the Heritage lead to 28-7 with 10:51 left on the scoreboard.
Winston would later see their final scoring opportunity end after a fumble and final turnover of the night with 35 seconds remaining. Winston’s offense saw Logan Webb lead the rushing attach with 32 yards and a score, He was followed by Taylor Moody with 30 yards. Webb also passed for 81 yards with Taylor Moody being his primary receiver with 45 yards on 4 catches. The defense saw Patrick McGivney lead the charge with 12 stops, Taylor Moody with 11 tackles and Reed McCool with 7 tackles. They were followed by Will Moody and Hunter McElroy with 6 each. Dale Chancellor recorded an interception.
As the Winston Patriots dropped to 0-3 for the year, the positive side of the story is that all these losses are to non district opponents. This week the Patriots will travel to district opponent Oak Hill in West Point. It’s now time to definitely put on their game face. Game time is set for 7:00 PM.
