The Patriots and Lady Patriots of Winston Academy have a busy schedule on the basketball court this week, including a trip to Canton Academy on Thursday to open up district play.
WA began the week with a trip to Meridian to take on Lamar School, before hosting Newton County Academy on Tuesday and traveling to Canton on Thursday. The Patriots and Lady Patriots will host Kirk on Monday, Dec. 9 and Tri-County Academy the next night.
The Lady Patriots of WA went into the week’s action at 7-4 on the season after losing two of three games the week before Thanksgiving Holidays.
WA dropped a 43-35 decision to homestanding Pillow Academy of Greenwood on Nov. 19 in a game that saw the Lady Pats trail just 16-15 at the half. Pillow outscored the visitors 15-11 in the fourth quarter to put the game away.
Katie McCool led Winston with nine points in the game, while Marianne Ward had eight and Darby Nowell six.
On Nov. 21 Winston jumped out to a 27-4 first-quarter lead on the way to a solid 50-15 road win over Central Academy in Macon. Nowell scored 12 to lead the winners, while Ward had 11 and McCool and Madeleine Kirkpatrick tossed in eight points each.
Two days later the Lady Patriots fell behind early against defending State Champion Starkville Academy on the way to a 46-31 setback. Starkville led 18-8 after one quarter and 26-16 at the half, before Winston whittled it to 32-25 after three quarters of play. The Lady Vols outscored WA 14-6 in the final quarter to put the game away.
Nowell led the Lady Patriots with 11 points, while Ward connected for 10 and McCool and Hayden Hudspeth scored five points each.
