The Beauty and the Beast reigned over Patriot Field last Friday night!
Homecoming Queen Jade Smith and her court brought beauty and charm to the Winston homecoming activities, while her Patriot football team brought doom and destruction to the visiting Wayne Jaguars.
In a game that always is a fight until the finish, there was no change as the battle was not determined until the end of the night. The Patriots got on the board first on Winston’s second possession when Zach Taylor ran it in from 6 yards out.
Gage Graham kicked the extra point to send Winston on top 7-0 with 4:57 left in the opener. After a series of punts, Wayne would tie the game at 7-7 with 4:16 left before halftime. But the Patriots broke the tie quick on the next possession when Logan Webb crossed the goal line from 2 yards out. Graham added the point after kick to send the teams into half with the Patriots on top 14-7.
After a beautiful presentation of the homecoming court at halftime, the Patriots came out and increased their lead when Webb found Orien Dailey open for a 44 yard touchdown pass.
Winston then elected to go for two when Carter Lane Jones found Brody Burchfield open in the end zone for the conversion to send the Winston lead to 22-7.
The Jaguars answered right back with a touchdown, but the two point conversion attempt failed and they had cut the Winston lead to 22-13 with 2:59 left in the third quarter.
As the final quarter got underway, Winston quickly added more points after a Zach Taylor 2 yard touchdown run. The PAT attempt never got airborne due to a bad center-holder exchange and Winston built their lead to 29-13 with 10:49 left in the game. The Jags then proved why these two teams battle to the finish and answered right back with a score of their own to make it a 28-19 Winston lead. But their important try for two failed, thus making it a 2 score game with 7:52 left in play. The Patriots then ran the clock down to final minutes of the game to capture their third win on the season to even their record at 3-3.
For the contest offensively, Zach Taylor led the charge with 134 yards in rushing and 2 touchdowns. Logan Webb broke the 100 yard barrier with 125 yards in rushing and 1 score, while Orien Dailey added 36 yards on the ground. Gage Graham added two extra points.
The passing attack saw Webb pass for 115 yards and 1 touchdown pass of 44 yards to Orien Daily. Daily finished as the leading receiver with 72 yards, and was followed by D.K. Boydstun with 19 yards.
On the defensive side of the ball, several Patriots stood out as Zach Taylor, Tanner Moore, and Sam Dempsey, each recorded 9 tackles. They were followed by Will Moody with 6 stops. Orien Dailey and Dale Chancellor each recorded an interception.
So as the Patriots travel south to Mendenhall this week to take on the high powered Simpson Cougars, they will take a two game winning streak into Simpson County.
This non district game will test the Patriots against the strongest opponent on their schedule. Their goal, “ UPSET”!!
