Winston County Coroner Scott Gregory currently serving as in his third term as Coroner of Winston County has been elected as Vice President of the Mississippi
Coroner/ Medical Examiners Association on Friday July 11, 2014. He was elected by the 162 members of the MS Coroner/ M.E. Association unanimously.
Gregory will begin serving his two-year term as Vice President in January 2015. Gregory is also currently the district 5 president for the ten counties surrounding Winston County.
Gregory, Chief Medical Examiner Investigator for Winston County, served as district president from 2007-2009 and 2011, 2012 as well as 2014, presiding over a ten county area including: Calhoun, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Clay, Lowndes, Monroe, Noxubee, Oktibbeha, Webster and Winston. As District President, Gregory has been serving on the executive board of the Mississippi Coroner. Medical Examiner for this year and is in charge of overseeing monthly district meetings to allow Coroners and Deputy Coroners in the 10 county district to receive part of the required 24 hours per year of continuing education. Each district meeting counts as 2 hours continuing education for each coroner so that they can get recertified at the close of each year to continue to serve as coroner in his or her county. The meetings feature different speakers each month teaching a variety of different subjects regarding death investigation and are spread out equally among the 10 counties so that each county coroner can adjust their schedule accordingly in order to attend the meetings and receive the hours needed.
Gregory stated, “I am honored to have been elected by my peers in the state of Mississippi to serve as Vice President of our outstanding association. It is indeed a huge honor to have been selected by all of the members of the association to serve as the vice president. I look forward to working along with Ellis Stuart, Copiah County Coroner and President-Elect as well as Ginger Meriweather, Secretary-Elect and Tallahatchie County Coroner as well as the coroners of each MS County. I also want to thank my family and the citizens of Winston County for their prayers and support as I continue to serve this great county as coroner. Thank you to all of the voters who helped re-elect me in 2011 to the Winston County Coroner Office. I look forward to serving out 2014 as District President and striving to help make the Mississippi Coroner/ Medical Examiner Association a stronger organization. The MS Coroner/ Medical Examiner Association is responsible for providing continuing education credits for all Coroners in Mississippi. It is mandatory through state law that all Coroners and their Deputies complete 24 hours of continuing education hours per year and once per term complete a 40 hour death investigation course in order to serve as a Coroner.
Gregory will serve on the board of directors of the Mississippi Coroner/Medical Examiner Association for the remainder of 2014 as well. Currently the Coroner’s office is located in the Winston County Sheriff’s Department and Gregory can e reached by calling 662-773-5881.
