The January meeting of the Winston Garden Club was held January 8 at Lake Tiak O’Khata. There were nine members and one guest present. Betty Sullivan and Sheila Hickman served as hostesses. They used a “Protect our Birds” as the night’s theme. Using this theme, they decorated the tables with bird houses and bird feeders. They also provided dessert and door prizes.
President, Charlotte Files, called the meeting to order. Sheila Hickman gave the devotional. Mary Rose Moore led the club in the Pledge of Allegiance. Following a meal and dessert, Janice Dill introduced the speaker for the evening.
Elizabeth Johnson, owner of Uptown Lily, presented a program on “Basic Floral Design”. Mrs. Johnson explained design principles and elements. She provided a slide show of samples of her beautiful designs as well as an arrangement of fresh flowers. Mrs. Johnson emphasized that you learn by doing and that floral design is so expressive and is truly an art form.
A business meeting followed the night’s program. • January birthdays were recognized: Betty Sullivan, Sheila Hickman • The club members responsible for flowers for the Winston County Library in the month of February were reminded of their dates • Arbor Day is February 8. The club will plant trees that day • The National Garden Club web site has changed. Members were given the address with sign in and password information The Winston Garden Club concluded the meeting with door prizes. Winners were Eve Haggard, Janice Dill, Bonnie Fulton, and Charlotte Files.
The February meeting will be held February 12 at Lake Tiak O’Khata. The speaker will be Dr. Jenne Jones, Mississippi Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. Her topic will be “Developing Bird Habitat”.
