Winston Guards #2643 MS Division United Daughters of the Confederacy® met on March 4, 2013 in the Lake Tiak O’Khata room with Paula Fulton and Theresa Daly serving as hostesses. The tables were decorated with white tablecloths and vases of fresh camillas on each table. We had thirteen members and three visitors present.
Frances Woodruff, President, opened the meeting at 5:45p.m.
After our meal, Frances introduced our speaker, Kimball Johnson of Columbus. He is the chairman of the MS Veterans’ Monument Commission. He is a retired Colonel with the U.S. Air Force and a Vietnam veteran. He serves as the 3rd District MS Supreme Court Representative. His topic was the MS Monument to be placed in the Shiloh Military Park. Funding for the monument is being helped by the SCV and UDC. They are also working on some grant money. Mississippi, Georgia and do not have a monuments in Shiloh. The projected date for the monument to be placed in April 20, 2015.
The Louisiana Crescent Regiment Monument was funded by a private individual. He showed pictures of some of the Veterans’ Monuments. There are several proposals on the table for the design of the monument. The Hardy Pattern Battle Flag is being considered and possible the 6th MS. The 6th MS lost 300 of their 425 members and was the 4th highest causality lost by a Southern regiment in a single battle. The monument will be aesthetically pleasing and historically correct. He showed some monuments that are in other National Parks and showed of the preliminary drawings of some of the contacted sculptors. Due to the length of the program, our business meeting was a short one. We adjourned by holding hands and singing “Bless Be The Tie That Binds”.
