Since 1890 Woodmen of the World, a not for profit fraternal benefit society, has been providing insurance and benefits to its members and helping to improve their communities. One such community project was the formation of Woodmen Summer Youth camps all across the U.S. Originally called the Woodmen Rangers, these campers roughed it out during the hot summer nights each year. Once such camp was located just north of Ackerman, MS and it still operates today.
Early camping was very primitive at the site with campers having to truck their own water in for showers and cooking. And at that time it was boys only. In the late 60′s to early 70′s several local Woodmen members and Representatives and the lodges they represented spent a lot of time and money on making the camp what it is today. The camp is now accredited with the ACA, American Camp Association and is open to Woodmen youth members, boys and girls, ages 8-15.
Today the camp consists of:
A huge dining hall with a commercial kitchen area to prepare all the camp meals.
A pavilion for games and a concession stand
Playground with swings, tether ball, merry go round, etc
Separate boys and girls air conditioned cabins
In-ground swimming pool with lifeguard
Putt Putt golf course
Low Ropes obstacle course
Talent Show and Dance
And Disc Golf
Now that the 2013 camp is over, the counselors, directors, and the board of the North MS Woodmen of the World Fraternal Association, Inc. are making plans to improve the camp for 2014 and possibly add more activities.
